Lord Kitchener

... died on 5 June 1916 when the cruiser HMS Hampshire struck a German mine and sank, west of the Orkney Islands. He was on his way from Scapa Flow to Archangel, to discuss the difficulties that Russia was having on the Eastern Front, with a view to providing relief in the form of munitions, strategy and finance. He was one of more than 600 who lost their lives in the sinking.
